The allowance money of 29 heroic freedom fighters for the month of February has not been credited in their respective accounts of Sonali Bank’s Dhunat Upazila Branch without any reason. In this situation, extreme frustration is prevailing among the freedom fighters. Many are going to the bank authorities and the upazila administration to find out the matter. A search at the Dhunat Branch of Sonali Bank revealed that a year ago, the freedom fighters’ allowance was waived from the Department of Social Services. At present, the honorarium of the heroic freedom fighters is also paid in the same manner as the salary is transferred to the government employees’ bank accounts. The accounts have been opened in the name of the valiant freedom fighters for transacting allowance money. Through Electronic Fund Transfer (EFT) system, honorarium of Tk 20,000 is deposited to the account of each freedom fighter every month. The account holder receives information about the deposit of allowances through mobile phone messages. On Monday, a number of freedom fighters visited the bank and found out that the allowance money had not been deposited in their account numbers. Again, some freedom fighters have withdrawn their allowances. There was a mixed reaction among them. Many including freedom fighters Babar Ali, Sohrab Hossain, Mozzammel Haque, Hatemuzzaman, Nazrul Islam, Mohsin Alam and Matiur Rahman, who did not get honorarium allowance, said that they got January allowance, but the honorarium for the month of February was not credited to their bank. Initially, it was learnt that after the completion of the inclusion of names in the integrated list, everyone will get the allowance. However, a source close to the heroic freedom fighters said that the National Freedom Fighters Council has formulated a comprehensive list of valiant freedom fighters. Those whose names are on the list have got the honorarium money via their bank accounts. The names of those who did not get the honorarium are only in the gazette. The council did not approve the gazette. In this situation, even though their names were sent to their respective upazilas for verification and selection, the council is not satisfied with that verification and selection report.
Former commander of Dhunat Upazila Muktijoddha Sangsad valiant freedom fighter Ferdous Alam said, “I know the matter. I will look into the matter.” Mahbubul Alam, manager of Sonali Bank Limited, Dhunat Branch said that out of 192 people in his branch, 29 honorarium allowances were not deposited last February. He did not receive any letter regarding the non-deposit.
